News : New and Unique definitions of archaeological objects at Lumbini is published

Prof. Dr. Tulsi Ram Baidya, vice-chancellor of Lumbini Bouddha University, released a book Lumbini: a Historical and Archaeological Study by Basanta Maharjan.

Prof. Dr. Mukunda Aryal, head of department of Nepali History, Culture and Archaeology at the Tribhuvan University (TU) commented on the book. ''The book has come up with new and unique definitions of archaeological objects at Lumbini,'' said Dr Aryal , adding that the book gives a complete picture of Lumbini with the definition of pre-Maurian, Maurian, Sunga, Kushan and Gupta periods of Indian history in connection with Lumbini.

The book also contains unpublished photographs, information collected while excavating at the Maya Devi temple in 1993 to 1996 by the Lumbini Development Trust, Department of Archaeology and the Japan Buddhist Foundation.

Basanta Maharjan, author of the book, said: ''Most of the excavators who worked in Lumbini did not publish the report; hence information and knowledge regarding Lumbini has remained unknown. I have issustrated the achievements of excavation works with photographs taken when excavation works were carried out.'' (The Himalayan Times, 17.12.2005)
